If you think you have all the qualifications to be owned by this great breed please
TAKE YOUR TIME AND DON'T RUSH INTO BUYING A PUPPY.
There are plenty of unscrupulous breeders (generally known as Puppy Farmers) who are waiting out there to take your money and dump you with what seems to be a nice friendly healthy Basset puppy but it may turn out to be otherwise. Several puppies from dubious sources have had to be euthanased due to vicious tendency which is not present in puppies bred by genuine breeders
Here a a few helpful tips
Look carefully at the web pages advertising puppies - Genuine breeders advertise their Basset Hounds because they are proud of them - they do not advertise puppies non-stop! People who are always advertising puppies are best avoided. If you keep finding an advert they must be desperate to sell them - why? Also consider carefully any breeder who says that their puppies are reared with children or are reliable with children. - why are they saying this - have they had a problem with Basset temperaments? - puppies do not have to be reared with children to make them good pets! Genuine breeders advertise their puppies simply without lots of ‘buz’ words to grab your attention, as they want to speak to you personally about their puppies. Never buy a puppy from someone who says they will deliver - you must visit to look at the environment the puppy has been reared in and also to pick your puppy up. Also think carefully before buying a puppy advertised with no Kennel Club restrictions or endorsements - does this mean that the seller doesn’t care what happens to his puppies??
If someone is advertising ‘Show quality’ puppies please check that they have actually shown Bassets for some time and know what they are talking about! Genuine breeders do not advertise their puppies as ‘show quality’ as they know it is extremely difficult to guarantee this at 8 weeks. If puppies are only a few days or weeks old and are advertised as ‘show quality’ - don’t proceed. Please check with an advisor if you are worried. Also some sellers may mention Kennel names to make an impression - check with the owners of these name to see if they recommend them
Ask when the dam (mother) of the puppies last had a litter - if under a year - don’t buy
If a litter is advertised as ‘KC (Kennel Club) registered’ this does not mean that you have found a genuine breeder as almost anyone can register a litter of puppies with the Kennel Club.
If the breeder says they are only a small breeder and own both parents - why have they mated them. Do they really have the welfare of the Basset at heart or is it just money ?????????
Adverts to think very carefully about will say something like --
‘Can deliver’
‘Will meet you on motorway’
‘cuddled by children every day’
‘due to timewasters’
‘Only a small breeder and I own both parents’
‘Vet checked before leaving’
‘Family business with a selection of puppies’
‘Raised in home with children’
‘We are not breeders but a loving family’
‘Stunning gorgeous basset puppies’
‘Reared with love and care with children’
‘Non-returnable deposits taken’
‘Your deposit is not returnable’
‘Big boned wrinkly puppies’
‘Mum & dad are brilliant with children’
